London mayor Boris Johnson announced the decision to transform the city into the electric car capital of Europe. He said he wants to bring 100,000 electric cars on the streets of the capital and to build an infrastructure of 25,000 charging points in car parks, shops and public streets.
“The time for simply talking about electric vehicles is over – we need real action on the ground to make the electric vehicle an easy choice for Londoners,” said Johnson. “I am today committing millions to install the infrastructure needed for when, in just a few years time, these vehicles will become much more widely available.”
Among the proposals are the change to London’s real estate plan, ensuring that all new buildings will be designed to install power points and at least one in five of the new parking spaces will be equipped with charging facilities. He also wants to replace at least 1,000 of the GLA’s vehicle fleet with electric cars until 2015.
